Specialist assessment of a child with sensory integration dysfunction Experts who do the assessment and provide sensory integration therapy are educated physiotherapists or occupational therapists with special education for sensory integration therapy.

They conduct the assessment of the efficiency of child’s sensory processing of central nervous system. This comprehends the quality of integration of tactile, vestibule and proprioceptive sense, motor planning, arm and eye coordination, eye muscles reactions, postural reactions and, if there is no specialist medical report, visual and auditory perception.

Psychiatric assessment

Neuropediatric assessment

Depending on the age of a child neurpaediatrician assesses the child’s behavior, social cooperation, interest, attention, vision, audition, muscle tension, the amount and type of movements, acquired skills (head position, turning on back/ stomach, sitting, crawling, standing, walking, hands agility when manipulating objects and similar). According to neuropediatrician’s assessment application of specific procedures will be reccommended to parents in order to help them treat the child in the everyday life. (handling) or including in the habilitation treatment (neurodeveloping therapy Bobath, therapy Vojna, therapy of sensory integration, vibrotherapy) or some other type of treatment.

Educational rehabilitation assessment

Describing certain capabilities such as motor skills, praxis, lateralization, cognition, speech, behaviour etc. educational rehabilitator provides the description of certain behaviours of a child.

Through these descriptions we perceive eventual problems such as non coordination or lack of child’s abilities. With the instruments of general special education and rehabilitation assessment we gain a deeper view of a clinic picture which is crucial for making rehabilitation program or for deeper clinic investigation, as well as structuring educational work and special procedures in the work which should be organised according to child’s potentials.

Speech pathology assessment

Speech therapist assesses communication and language- speech development of children based on which an expert result is given as well as an opinion accompanied with recommendations for further therapies or diagnostic procedures.

Things that are being assessed include the play, receptive language (understanding of language), expressive language (capability of language expression), articulation (pronunciation of phonemes), degree of language development, pre reading and pre writing skills, reading and writing.

Occupational therapy assessment

All components of development are being assessed with the emphasis on activities of self- caring (feeding, drinking, putting clothes on, taking clothes off), play and fine motor skills, object manipulation and grafomotorics.

When dealing with children who suffer from multiple difficulties, occupational therapy is defined as a medical profession which deals with (re)habilitation of children in order to enable them to reach maximum functionality in everyday life.
